Michelob ULTRA Light Cider Review

June 11, 2012 by Melanie

If you would ask my old roommate (before I was married) what my drink of choice would be at the bar, she’d probably say a Snakebite (half Guinness, half Cider) although I am still not sure if that’s the proper name as someone once told me it’s really called a Black Velvet. Either way, we called them Snakebites. The cider gives the drink that perfect punch of sweetness. I haven’t had one in years.

So when I heard of Michelob’s new drink Michelob ULTRA light Cider I couldn’t wait to try it. It is a lighter version of many of the hard ciders out on the market which to me, sounded like a perfect summer drink. It’s made from crisp apples and is naturally sweetened.

I tried it out over Memorial Day weekend when we had a few days of clear blue skies. Our grill has not been set up since we moved, but we were able to sit outside on our new deck and enjoy an adult beverage. What I immediately noticed about the ULTRA Light Cider was how light and refreshing it was. Not at all heavy or overly sweet like a traditional cider. The carbonation got me giddy- look at all those bubbles!

It was great out of the bottle or poured over ice. When it comes to adult beverages, I always steer towards the cold ones in the summer- white wine, beer or margaritas, etc. This light cider is a great alternative to those.

For those of you concerned with calories, it has 120 calories per bottle, which is 1/3 less calories than the average of other leading hard ciders. Since alcohol can easily contribute to weight gain, it’s important to factor these into your plan if you are watching your weight. Alcohol is a major part of many social occasions and I believe that when consumed in moderation, it can fit into a healthy lifestyle. Alcohol provides energy because it has calories (7 calories per gram versus 4 calories per gram for protein and carbohydrates and 9 calories per gram for fat), but it doesn’t provide any essential nutrients so we want to consume it in moderation. With that being said, I am all about a good alcoholic drink in moderation!

This light cider is definitely something I’ll keep on hand for when I want a light and refreshing drink, especially this summer. I think it would pair excellent with all sorts of grilled foods- from vegetables to burgers.

It’s available in a 6-pack of 12 ounce bottles. You can find Michalob Ultra Cider at a variety of locations from Walmarts to grocery outlets. Check out Michelob’s site here and come see what other people thought of the cider by visiting Michelob ULTRA Light Cider Page on blogher.com.

Which favorite summer meal or activity do you think would go best with Michelob ULTRA Cider?
