10 Favorite Gluten Free Snacks

November 19, 2013 by Melanie 2 Comments

Just because I don’t follow a strict diet doesn’t mean I don’t like to experiment eating gluten free. There are so many more options available these days as compared to 15 years ago!

Remember when I posted here about gluten free entertaining and explained there are plenty of naturally gluten free foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, meats, seafood and dairy products that will make up a large part of your diet. Today, however, I want to talk about my favorite gluten free snack food.

One of my good friends in gluten free and I always think about her when I grocery shop. Is this a product or food that I’d recommend to her and her family? So here are 10 great gluten free snacks that I’d recommend to anyone whether they are living a gluten free lifestyle or not.

1. Olives

Olives are a whole food that have just the right amount of fat to make them a satisfying snack. Since olives are high in sodium you won’t want to eat a huge portion, but you won’t need to. You can even buy them in individual packages for on-the-go snacks.

2. Rice and Seed Crackers

I LOVE these kinds of crackers. They are especially delicious paired with a dip like guacamole or your favorite cheese.

3. Fruit & Nut bars

There are actually quite a few protein/snack bars that are gluten free, but I like the simplicity of the bars made with dried fruit and nuts. I know a lot of people who make them at home, something I haven’t gotten around to.

4. Gluten Free Oats/Granola

Oats themselves do not contain gluten but during processing they are often cross-contaminated with wheat, rye or barley. Some oat brands can not guarantee their oats are gluten free, therefore you want to make sure the oats or granola you buy is labeled gluten free.

5. Fresh juice

Whether you make your own juice at home or purchase them, fresh juices are a great way to add quality nutrition to your diet.

6. Trail mix

When you think of trail mix you probably think of nuts and dried fruit, but there are several options of gluten free add-ins to change it up: shredded coconut, banana chips, popcorn, corn nuts, chocolate chips or chocolate covered raisins, etc. I usually make my own but they do sell plenty of packaged options if you are in a hurry.

7. Nut butters

Whether you prefer peanut, almond, cashew or sunflower seed butter, they are all great gluten free choices. I enjoy my nut butters on bread, in oatmeal, slathered on fruit like apples, bananas and plantains, in pancakes, with dark chocolate for a little dessert or right off the spoon.

8. Tortilla Chips & Salsa

There are so many delicious chips out there- some made with all corn, some a mix of different seeds and grains like quinoa, rice, flax, etc. Perfect with fresh salsa which is easy to make and delicious to eat!

9. Gluten Free Cookies

Just because you are eating gluten free doesn’t mean there isn’t room for treats. These, among others like the brownie bites from Udi’s, will make you feel like you’re not missing a thing!

10. Roasted Chickpeas

A high fiber, high protein snack that you can make yourself (using cooked chick peas roasted with different seasonings) or you can also find them pre-packaged.

So those aree just 10 of my favorite gluten free foods to snack on. In addition to fruits, vegetables and dairy, there are plenty of options!

Remember snacks are intended to balance out our diets, provide us with nutrition and prevent us from getting too hungry so make them count!

OLIVES – YES! Definitely one of my favorites! I also adore spaghetti squash and butternut squash and I adore sardines or salmon cans – the mini ones, perfect for snacks 🙂 Nori sheets are also good snacks in my eyes because they’ve got the crunch factor I like!
