Eat Right for National Nutrition Month

March 1, 2013 by Melanie 20 Comments

It’s time to eat right. March is National Nutrition Month and the theme for 2013 is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” which encourages personalized healthy eating styles and supports the fact that different factors affect our diets such as lifestyles, cultural traditions, food intolerances, allergies, etc. I think this is a great theme because not all eating plans or diets work for everyone. There are so many factors that impact our food choices, yet we can all find a way to eat healthy.

I really love this campaign, obviously because I am a Registered Dietitian so encouraging others to create sound eating and physical activity habits is so important to me. The campaign was initiated in March of 1973 as a week-long event, but became a month-long observance in 1980!

I thought what better way to kick off National Nutrition Month than with a challenge? Print it off and tweet or instagram your healthy eating habits with the hashtag #eatrightNNM (nutritiouseats on Instagram). That’s right, let’s eat right for National Nutrition Month. It’s what we should be doing anyway but sometimes we need a little motivation.

Eat Right Challenge for National Nutrition Month

Feel free to complete the challenges our of order- just print off the handout and cross things off as you go along. You can also substitute other healthy challenges on days that are too easy for you. Remember, this month is about emphasizing a personalized plan and although all the challenges are healthy ones, they might not suit every single person. A couple of the days might require you to do a little research. For example, don’t know what foods are high in Vitamin A or lycopene? Just google it! I promise you will learn a little something.

I would love to see a lot of participants to bring awareness to eating healthy and the importance of nutrition!

Remember if you are on twitter or instagram follow each others tweets or pictures using the #eatrightNNM hashtag!

What a great idea! Do you have an Instagram picture of the challenge? If so, I’d love to try to follow along by posting my pics with your hashtag on IG! I’d skip out on the grains since I’m paleo, though, but would love the vegan/veggie challenge on those couple days!

I had no idea that March was National Nutrition month. This is a great idea! I’m taking a little break from challenges but I will definitely try to participate in this when I can because let’s be honest – I need to work on my nutrition!

Love this! I’m a dietetic intern in the last few months of my internship. All of my fellow interns and I, along with the RDs at the hospital, have a whole month long series of events planned. Everything from kids activities, fitness, cooking demos, and nutrition seminars. Thanks for the great tips. I just printed it to put on my fridge (going to make my husband attempt this). I eat pretty healthy, but he could improve his diet a little. Maybe this will give him a nudge. 🙂

I remember doing all sorts of neat things in the hospital too. It’s great to see so much involvement. Thanks for your comment!

That looks like an awesome challenge! I love when there is one item per day- so much more doable than committing to something (like no sweets) for an entire month. 🙂 Have a great weekend!!
