Run for Boston

April 17, 2013 by Melanie 8 Comments

Run for Boston

I don’t have much to say. Yesterday the web was filled with beautifully written, emotional posts about the tragedy in Boston. I am just left speechless. Certainly not ready to post about food. Ugh.

I woke up yesterday knowing it was time to run again, after letting my foot rest for 2 weeks. I ran for Boston. I had a pain-free, peaceful run in the beautiful sun as I reflected the previous days events, but immediately after I stopped running my foot hurt.  Whatever the case may be, it felt amazing to run again. That’s a feeling that shouldn’t be taken away from anyone.

Knowing so many people who ran the race through the blogging and running communities has made this especially scary, and those that were involved have far more powerful words than I can muster at the moment.

A place close to my heart, where I spent years in graduate school, was in harms way….but it doesn’t really matter where that place was. Whether we have bonds or connections to where the tragedy occurred, it doesn’t matter. We all care. We are all affected.

What is such a monumental race in our country will now be tainted, but that is just what the evildoers want. We can’t let that happen.

Personally, when these tragic events happen, it makes me depressed for the weeks following, which I think is quite a normal reaction. With the frequency of these terrors on the rise, it makes me fear for our future and the future of my children….but fear is what they want.

All I know is there isn’t much we can do but to trust in God’s word and there isn’t anything more encouraging than that.

I ran yesterday in support. I had to. So many of my friends and their families were there. I wanted to be there. And I still WANT to be there one day. I’m not ready to get back into regular posting just yet. It doesn’t feel right….

More than ever, I love this beautiful community we are a part of. The love and support that has been shown the last few days is inspiring and gives me a little comfort even though things are so messed up right now.

So many eloquent post written about running and Boston, but I had a hard time reading more that a few. I did run yesterday and today, in a race shirt. My husband dug out an old Boston Marathon sweat shirt and wore it all day.

I’ve been running this week too. I needed to and wanted to. I still can’t quite wrap my head around what happened but it warms my heart to see how our community has pulled together.

Even though I don’t run I do follow a number of running blogs, and I had to check on the bloggers I know who were running Boston. It’s all quite awful. I recently had bad news that was much closer to home, so Boston was nothing by comparison, but this last week certainly had a variety of depressing news. I certainly hope that with all the improvements in modern medicine those who were injured will be able to walk, run, and live life as normally as possible.
